The NASCAR Cup Series returns for the final time this regular season, hitting the iconic Darlington Raceway in South Carolina for the Cookout Southern 500.
This year’s NASCAR regular-season race, with 15 bonus playoff points on the line, comes down to the final day, with Tyler Reddick looking to stave off Hendrick Motorsports challengers Kyle Larson and Chase Elliott.
Meanwhile, Harrison Burton’s shock victory stole yet another playoff spot from the ultra-competitive grid, leaving several drivers wary of their postseason places in Darlington.
Chris Buescher currently sits 21 points ahead of Bubba Wallace for the final playoff position, but another first-time winner on Sunday would apply some pressure to Ty Gibbs as well.
Last week’s Coke Zero Sugar 400 did little to quell the growing tensions in the NASCAR world, as a fiery race at Daytona International Speedway saw 15 drivers unable to finish the race. Darlington boasts a similarly chaotic reputation and projects to offer a thrilling final day, where Larson outlasted Reddick in 2023.
The 26th round of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series will begin at 6 p.m. ET on September 1.
The event is 501 miles long. The drivers will race over 367 laps of the roughly 1.33-mile-long track.
The Cookout Southern 500 can be broadcast on USA Network or streamed on FUBO. Radio coverage can be found on MRN and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.
Just three drivers are missing from the full list of 40 eligible entrants. Kaz Grala replaces Cody Ware for Rick Ware Racing in the No. 15 car, while part-time drivers Austin Hill, Parker Retzlaff and Joey Gase are out after featuring last week. Full time truck driver Timmy Hill will also make his second Cup Series start this season.
